Status Update for 2017
November 24, 2016
Greetings from the 12x12 Love Project in Guatemala!
It’s hard to believe it’s been 8 years since a few friends had a crazy idea; to bring hope, change and the love of Jesus, to a few families living in desperate poverty. You may remember our original goal: 12 homes in 12 months… and in just a few weeks we’ll complete house number 210. We never could have imagined the impact the project has had on the people of Magdalena and Buena Vista. Each of you have given so generously and we want to say thank you! We couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you for loving your neighbors as yourselves. Thank you for giving the way that you have over the years. It’s had an impact on us as well - and it’s been a privilege to connect your families with a family in Guatemala, through the donation of a new home. Each day we see many of your sponsored families and interact with them. We’ve become close friends with many, shared special moments with others, and even wept at the funerals of some. We wish each of you could see the impact a new home has had on your sponsored family in the same way that we have.
Over the last couple years we’ve begun to sense the reality that the project, at least in the Magdalena/BV area, will be coming to a close. This has been a bittersweet thought to each of us as we love the work that God has called us to through the 12x12 Love Project. But the reality is that most of the desperate housing situations that once existed have been met - and we celebrate this! In 2016 we’ll have completed 21 more homes for families in desperate need. However, the difficulty in identifying families that meet our stated criteria has led us to the conclusion that the time has come to move on. We are taking steps to identify another community where the project can begin anew and impact another generation living in abject poverty with Christ’s love. As we pray over this transition, we are open to the idea of re-launching in a new community in Guatemala, or even a new community somewhere across the globe. Please pray with us as we seek open doors in a new community and the missionary families needed to launch and run a new operation. We’re excited to see where God takes the ministry, and we will keep you informed as He leads! In addition, please feel free to contact us if you have any potential ideas/thoughts.
Many of you may not be aware that in 2016 the Steed Family, who have managed the 12x12 Love Project for several years, launched a new ministry in Magdalena called Project For Hope. Project For Hope is a ministry that works with widows, single mothers and their children in an effort to help these families build self-sustainable lives through work training, employment, education and healthcare assistance. Currently 100% of the single mothers and widows that Project For Hope assists are 12x12 Love Project families! For these families, Project For Hope is the next step in their journey to end the cycle of poverty in their families. In 2017 PFH hopes to begin construction on the fully funded $350k commercial greenhouse operation that will provide many needed jobs to the widows and single mothers in the program. We’re also hoping to finish paying for the PFH property in 2017.
In light of the current circumstances, we would like to ask you to consider giving to Project For Hope in this season when many of you would normally give to the 12x12 Love Project. While it is certainly a different ministry model, please know that we maintain the same commitment to eradicating poverty in this area, and are attempting to do so in even deeper ways. In addition, you can be certain that PFH holds to the same standard of integrity and transparency as 12x12 has over the years.
